Turning a problem in to a sustainable solution

Torrgreen is a mobile conversion technology, turning crop residues and other problematic feedstocks into a valuable commodity: Torrpellets.
Torrpellets are the basic feedstock for production of biofuels, green chemical products and renewable power. Our patented system allows for energy densification up to 40 times compared to the original feedstock, making very efficient transport with existing infrastructure feasible.
We are committed to solving ever-increasing problems with large scale food production and climate change, in a very realistic and scalable way. Torrgreen creates new green revenue streams for farmers and food producers worldwide, while improving the local environment and society.

Torrpower is a modular, decentralized green power technology, also developed by the Torrgreen team. Torrpellets are converted into green energy at the customer's location. Find out more.

Sizable impact with standardized and mobile technology.

The problems we solve

From waste to
fuel technology

Climate Watch: "Crop residue burning emits approximately the same amount of Greenhouse Gas emissions as all shipping and aviation combined".

  • Crops such as rice, sugar cane, wheat, and corn produce large quantities of residues.  A small part of the biomass in these plants (10 to 40%) is used to feed people and animals. Most of it is burned directly in the fields, creating pollution and fine particle emissions that affect millions of people. In other cases, it is left to decompose, releasing greenhouse gases.  This has a negative impact on the environment and society.  The worldwide quantities of these residues are enormous, exceeding 5 billion tons annually.
  • Invasives are species which spread very quickly and are harmful to native vegetation. This can be plants and trees that compete directly with native species for water, sunlight, nutrients, and space. Also, it can be invasive insects, like the ash borer beetle, can decimate forests. Due to climate change this problem has accelerated. Governments, farmers, and foresters at all levels are seeking economic ways to combat invasives, which Torrgreen can offer by turning them into feedstock for green energy.
  • As global temperatures rise, major storms are increasing in frequency and intensity.  Torrgreen combined with Torrpower offers a potential dual solution in disaster recovery, turning storm debris into a source of decentralized power when the electrical grid may be down.

With Torrgreen we can turn these problems into solutions -transforming crop residues, invasive plants, and storm debris into economic value. Creating a commodity for green chemicals. Producing biofuels for heavy polluting ships and airplanes. Generating local green heat and power and providing a biobattery to complement wind and solar to provide 24/7 renewable energy. And in the process creating many new jobs. All in a circular and sustainable way.

Torrgreen converts many types of feedstocks

Torrgreen renders significant impact to feedstock owners and society

Torrgreen is the first high-capacity mobile torrefaction system in the world, and it is very scalable.

  • We strengthen the position of all land users by creating new green revenue streams,
  • We address the high risks associated with crop residues and invasives, and
  • We help clean up recycled wood from urban areas and debris as result of natural disasters.

Our systems are operated at the source of the feedstock, as it allows for a large feedstock flexibility, where other technologies mainly process only wood-based streams.

Torrpellets have cost efficient transport as it uses easy, existing logistics.

For the buyers of torrefied material, Torrgreen provides a reliable upstream position in the fast-growing market for renewable energy and biorefinery solutions.

Torrgreen Systems are mobile and are operated at the source of the feedstock. They can be moved around.

In addition, our technology allows for a wide feedstock variability.

This is therefore a solution that is flexible with respect to location, type of feedstock and seasonality. Minimizing operating costs and unlocking the problematic and low-cost feedstocks. For the benefit of feedstock owners, society and the planet.

The patented Torrgreen technology is based on a fixed bed reactor. This means many types of feedstocks  of a wide range of shape and size,  including all woody- and most herbaceous biomasses and pits and shells of fruits can be converted. This is a great advantage over most other torrefaction technologies, especially in combination with the mobility of the Torrgreen systems.

Torrgreen Systems produce 4,000 to 6,000 ton/annum of Torrpellets, depending on the running hours per day and types of feedstock.
This enables an attractive business case and ROI.

Torrgreen systems are designed for operation in the field, also at remote locations. This implies it robustness and reliability. We use largely common and widely available components, allowing for easy and low-cost operation and maintenance. Also, the power consumption is kept very low, up to 5 times lower compared to other torrefactions technologies. Our systems can operate off grid, making maximum use of renewable sources for power and heat requirements for the conversion process.

The 20’ containerized Torrgreen Systems are produced in production lines. Our design is standardized a much as possible, with high and consistent quality and reliability as result. Yet, Torrgreen is modular and multiple Torrgreen containers can be combined in one Torrpellets production location, sharing pre-treatment and storage facilities. So very scalable!

The green and cheaper alternative to diesel generators. Based on agri residues.

Torrpower offers modular circular energy solutions

24-7 sustainable decentralized power

Torrpower produces decentralized energy in container format for off-grid customers. Reliable, affordable, and green. Torrpower’s modular systems have a power output of 200 to 1000 kWe and up to 2000 kWth of high-quality heat. Within this range, approximately 80% of the customers on the decentralized energy market can be served.

Production capacity which can quickly and easily be adapted to the demand for base and peak load. So widely applicable and very scalable, that offers an ideal complement to large-scale solar and wind installations, providing renewable energy through the same grid connection when they are not producing power.

Torrpower offers a cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative to diesel generators. Decentralized energy generation anywhere in the world, also for temporary demand. Suitable for purchase as well as for rental.

Electricity and heat available anytime and anywhere.

The high efficiency and low investment requirement results in substantially lower costs than for diesel generators.

Use of regional residual and waste flows for carbon neutral energy generation.

Torrpower capacity can be perfectly matched to local demand.

How Torrgreen contributes to a better world

Our promise to people and planet

Torrgreen is a triple bottom line enterprise. We will produce major benefits for our investors, employees, and the surrounding community and environment. By developing decentralized green energy technologies needed to help stop the rise in global warming.  Today’s biowaste burning already accounts for 3% of GHG emissions…

There are 3 primary pillars to Torrgreen’s ESG or CSR approach:

  1. Avoid GHG emissions by burning and fossil fuel burning. Therefore, we aim to grow Torrgreen’s mobile torrefaction technology as rapidly and responsibly as possible to turn biowaste into a versatile biofuel. And with Torrpower into a green energy solution that provides baseload and off-grid renewable energy, while capturing carbon in biochar.

  2. Use a percentage of the profits that Torrgreen generates, to leverage the unique attributes of our technology capabilities for the greater good, for example:
    - Supplying our equipment and Torrpellets to communities in the developing world that will enable them to create good jobs and become energy self-sufficient;
    - Providing an economically viable way to remove invasive species and hazardous materials (e.g. used rail ties, storm debris) by using them as feedstock to create green energy;
    - Using biochar to store carbon and enhance soil quality;
    - Providing complementary educational programs to increase understanding of the risks posed by climate change and the potential of biomass + mobile torrefaction to help solve the problem;

  3. Operate in an ethical and transparent way that shares the benefits Torrgreen produces with its stakeholders, including employee owners and surrounding communities.

About Torrgreen

Torrgreen's mission is to create a more sustainable planet with our unique, modular technology. In an economic and socially beneficial way.
Our strategy is to work with local partners in various regions of the world where we scale the number of Torrgreen systems in operation as fast as realistically possible.

We run our R&D activities in the Netherlands and India with support of EFRO.

For market development, we are in the process of founding regional JV's around the world. First to demo and then scale Torrgreen and Torrpower.
